In the first quarter of this year 2024, more than 3.9 million people travelling by air from France had their flights delayed, compared to the 16 million passengers who took a flight from an airport in the country, a study revealed on Tuesday 16 April.
A figure that is already significant. According to a study by AirHelp revealed on Tuesday 16 April, 3.9 million out of 16 million travellers saw their flight delayed on departure from France in the first quarter of 2024.
The company, which specialises in the recovery of air compensation, reveals that this delay affected more than 23% of the 117,000 flights that took off from our country in the first few months.
Total passenger numbers in the first quarter were down on the previous year, when 17.4 million passengers flew, but data on flight punctuality improved.
«In 2023, during the same period, 29.9% of flights were delayed departing from their origin airport; in 2024, the disruption rate improved by 6%, with delayed or cancelled flights falling to 23.3%,» says AirHelp.
Who are the good students?
While most of the delays at the start of 2024 were minor and did not give rise to financial compensation, the study nevertheless notes that 368,000 people «received compensation for a delay of more than 3 hours, the cancellation of their flight or a missed connection due to the delay of an earlier flight», it states.
And when it comes to punctuality, there are good and bad pupils. Bastia-Poretta airport, for example, is the most punctual: «Of the 86,000 passengers who took a flight at Bastia, 83.40% left on time», says the study.
The Corsican airport is followed by EuroAirport, located near Mulhouse (Alsace). At EuroAirport, 83% of the almost 700,000 passengers who travelled between January and March left on time.
In third place is Bordeaux airport, where 82.8% of passengers departed on time between January and March 2024.
Paris, Montpellier and Beauvais in a bad way
On the other hand, the percentages of passengers departing on time fall at Paris-CDG (Roissy-Charles de Gaulle), Montpellier and Beauvais airports, which have the highest delay rates.
Of the 6.7 million passengers who left the Paris airport served by RER B, almost 30% were delayed during the first quarter.
«Next, Montpellier Méditerranée airport and Beauvais airport have the worst punctuality figures, with 73.4% and 76.5% respectively of their flights departing on time», states
Although the data collected by the study did not reveal any major disruptions, the announcement of several strikes in the airline sector in various European countries did not get 2024 off to the best possible start.
In addition, more than 16,000 flights were cancelled in France between January and February 2024, due to the updating of air traffic control management software.
